Partnering with Cognizant to integrate Amref’s LEAP, JIBU and M-Jali mobile learning and reporting tools for more tailored training and greater community impact
Addressing health workforce challenges through data
Sub-Saharan Africa is facing a health workforce challenge; an increasing shortage of health workers, and a gap between the needs of the communities they serve and the training that they can access. There is an urgent need to bring quality training to more health workers that meets specific needs in the communities they serve, to allow them to create greater impact through efficient and effective service delivery.
Amref Health Africa has been providing health worker training in sub-Saharan Africa for more than 60 years, and in the past 15 years we have been trialling mobile training technologies through our mobile learning platforms LEAP and JIBU, and data collection tool M-Jali. These tools have allowed us to increase access to quality training to health workers, and assess training impact, in eight countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.
The need for integration
COVID-19 showed how critical these mobile and digital tools are. With these three tools Amref was able to quickly reach more than 200,000 health workers in 10 countries and collect data to respond to pandemic training needs. However, the pandemic also amplified the urgent need to close the gap between quality training and effective service delivery by better understanding the training journey.
Amref is partnering with Cognizant to integrate these tools into a new platform to better plan, identify and respond to training needs at the community level. This will allow better strategic decision-making driven by data insights and sharing of more accurate information across the health system.
“Amref’s partnership with GSK has been in existence for more than three decades. It is grounded in shared values and driven by the need to meet community needs. Our new partnership with Cognizant will make what we have done together with GSK even better; it’s not just about training health workers and data collection, it’s about the services provided by health workers to millions of people across the region.”
