Our impact in 2023
We are pleased to share our 2023 Impact Report which details the projects and progress we made together, towards our vision of bringing about lasting health change in Africa.
We believe that health is a fundamental human right and the key to a brighter future. This belief guides our mission to make health for all (Universal Health Coverage) a reality by 2030.
Watch Amref's CEO unpack Universal Health Coverage and how our strategy is working towards this goal.
In 2023, we implemented 193 programmes in 35 countries, reaching 16.6m people directly.
In 2023 we also marked the end of our UK Strategic Period 2020-2023. We are pleased to report that we reached our target income – raising around £6.5 million (US$8.2m) in 2023 which helped to fund 19 Amref programmes in seven countries.
The programmes focused on communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and treatment, maternal health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, water and sanitation, and health worker training. These are typical of our African-led, community driven approach to securing lasting health change.
Our new UK strategy was developed in 2023, aligned to the priorities identified by our colleagues in Africa and tailored to the UK context. Our global strategy is guided by our rights-based approach to health, and focusses on two objectives: increase primary healthcare access for all, and address the social determinants of health.
People-led, community-centred programming for health is the most critical thing in achieving these [rights-based health] services, in a way that people [don’t have] difficulty in accessing them.
Investing in primary healthcare
A robust primary healthcare system is designed around the people it serves and their needs, to ensure that they can easily access care where they live, work and play.
In 2023, we focused on the essential components of primary healthcare by enhancing community health systems, training healthcare workers, promoting sustainable health financing, supporting health-focused civil society organizations, and using innovation and technology to improve the effectiveness of primary healthcare programs.
Addressing social determinants of health
We believe that true health arises from investing in education, especially for girls, along with ensuring good nutrition, clean water and sanitation, unpolluted air, and an active lifestyle. Unfortunately, these crucial elements are frequently overlooked in health funding.
In 2023, we invested in programs and initiatives aimed at addressing the social factors that impact equitable access to quality primary healthcare. These include education, advocacy for vulnerable populations, climate and health issues, emerging health threats, as well as youth and urbanization.
You can read more about our work towards these two objectives in our 2023 Impact Report.
Thank you to all our supporters and partners who have supported this work through 2023 and made a difference to communities across Africa. Thank you for being part of our impact in 2023.
