Amref reaction: UK government plans to drop international climate pledge

A leaked briefing note to ministers, first reported by The Guardian, suggests the UK government is drawing up plans to drop its £11.6bn international climate finance pledge to support climate-vulnerable countries.

Camilla Knox-Peebles, chief executive of Amref Health Africa UK, said in reaction:

"We know that the impacts of climate change are felt most directly – and harshly – in the places and by the people that have contributed the least to emissions, including countries across Africa. Failed climate change mitigation is the biggest future global threat. The UK government’s failure to meet its £11.6bn international climate funding target damages the UK’s climate leadership, threatens progress made on climate change mitigation and puts in danger the lives and livelihoods of millions of the world’s most vulnerable people."
