Kenya Flooding Appeal

Since March heavy rains have bombarded Kenya and are predicted to continue throughout May. Crops are destroyed, infrastructure damaged and 200,000 people had to flee their homes. Over 200 people have died.

Fleeing the destruction

The heavy rains caused floods that have devastated communities across Kenya. Nearly 200 people have died so far. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced and 90 temporary relief camps have sprung up. The communities affected urgently need food, water, sanitation, hygiene services and shelter. Vulnerable people still need rescued.

The rains are predicted to continue throughout May. With increased damage in already affected communities and more areas likely to be impacted, this terrible situation is becoming a humanitarian crisis.

Cholera has already been detected amid a surge of diarrhoea. The flooding has caused water contamination and intensified water-borne diseases. Communities desperately need facilities to ensure safe water for drinking and cleaning.

Healthcare cut off

Healthcare across the country is cut off – roads are impassable, buildings are destroyed and workers can’t reach their clinics.

We are providing mobile clinics across relief camps and in marooned health facilities so people can continue to access primary healthcare.

Our focus is on women and children - continuing vital pre- and post-natal care and supporting mother and infant nutrition. We are well placed to provide essential medications for the treatment of water-borne diseases, malaria and dehydration for the whole community.

Health workers are vital to combatting disease arising from the flooding and these mobile clinics will enable them to continue to provide essential support.

Give a gift to support mobile health clinics today.
